Scientific research (Harvard) has shown that for a team to be
EFFECTIVE or
HIGH PERFORMING, the following 3 team outcomes must be in a healthy state.
1) Business (task) performance means that the team delivery is sustainable, predictable and meets or exceeds the expectations of internal and external stakeholders.
2) Quality of the group process means that the group is becoming more and more effective over time, the team is in a continuous growth cycle.
3) Member satisfaction means that the collective contributes to the learning, growth and satisfaction of its members. Individuals on the team are fully and proactively engaged.
Before moving on to processes and methodologies, we need to make sure that the 6 Conditions for Team Effectiveness are at a healthy stage.
The 6 Conditions for Team Conditions framework comes from
decades of research and is the
best validated model for predicting performance in real world teams. The framework identifies the 6 Conditions that can be deliberately designed into a team and that together create an environment in which great teamwork will emerge.
Research has shown that the
6 Conditions are responsible for up to 80% of a team's effectiveness. To benefit from the Agile mindset and methodologies, it is crucial to first intervene in the 6 conditions. These can be divided into 3 essential and 3 enablers.
THE ESSENTIALS are the three main conditions that provide a solid foundation for any team to achieve operational excellence (perform effectively):
- a real team, that works with
- a compelling purpose and
- involving the right people.
If any of these conditions are missing or weak, teams will inevitably struggle over time. Have you ever wondered why your Agile Transformation isn't working? Why teams stagnate and even regress?
THE FACILITATORS: provides the team's score in
- Sound Structure, which includes team size,
- Basic rules of conduct. It shows whether the team works in a favorable organizational context, i.e., whether the organization's structures and systems enable teamwork rather than impede it.
- Team Coaching, that is, the availability of someone to proactively advise and guide the team to develop effective processes and approaches on how to work together. In addition, this person helps ease the tensions that get in the way of effective work.
These three conditions accelerate the speed at which teams become truly excellent professionals.
Three intermediate elements need to be in a healthy state to achieve
operational excellence.KEY TASK PROCESSES refers to the state of health of:
- Team capacity to co-create, which results in the team using all of its capabilities to innovate and collaborate brilliantly, and the team, over time, develops this attribute. When in a healthy state, the team is fueled by a state of collective intelligence.
- Effort is to work in a way that builds shared commitment, accountability to the work and purpose of the team.
- Strategy It is the "HOW" we work collectively that enables us to do our best work. Knowledge and skills are an indicator that members are able to effectively leverage their individual capabilities.
